0029 The death of Juan de Leon is one of many mysteries of Big Bend's past. What happened on July 19, 1932, is unclear. What is known is that Juan de Leon was shot and killed while riding his horse. His body was not found for several days, and was so decomposed from the hot July sun that he was buried where he fell. There are a number of accounts of how de Leon was murdered. According to his family, the gunshot came from a low-lying hill and Juan was left for dead next to the road. The story goes that the mule was startled from the gunshot and ran back to Chata's store. The saddle was covered with blood. http://www.nps.gov/bibe/historyculture/juan-de-leon.htm 1554 Bedded stuff is probably Maxwell's QTog, consolidated terrace, pediment, and valley fill deposits, as it is horizontal and the K beds dip to the W at about 10 deg. Large rocks over alluvium a puzzle. They look like bu and would have to be placed over the alluvium, which is younger, by water or landslide action. Prob also concentration of heavy rocks due to lighter stuff being washed or blown away. 1554-55 Unusual outcrop of alluvium. Note angularity of large pieces of ls and uneven surface between stratified alluvium and layer of angular ls pieces. Could be landslide debris serving as a sort of desert pavement. 0037 Beds of the Buda Fm in the draw leading to Ernst Tinaja. Look E. 1556 Good example of strike and dip in bu. Landform is cuesta with dip to W and N-S scarp on E. Strike N30W, dip 8 W. Note scoured rock in bed vs less scoured rock on bank. 0040 Beds of bu, looking W. Looks like bo on ridge in background. 0041 Worn fossil. Appears to be in Buda (bu), which is not known for fossils "Further review" indicated it could be the ammonite allocriocerus, which is found toward the bottom of the San Vicente member of the bo, which would mean the previous images involve the bo, not the bu. But the rock is very "bu" in appearance. And, if you look at 40 above, what appears to be the bo forms the ridge in the background. That would make the bu-looking rocks actually bu. Also, there weren't too many fossils seen, unlike you see in the fossiliferous layers of the bo. 1558 Narrow passage through Del Rio clay (dr). 1559 Ernst Tinaja. Dr resting on se (santa elena). 1560-61 Ditto. 1560 only picture with a scale reference (Randy)! 0049 Ernst Tinaja. Small hole may indicate how tinaja began to form 1562 Looking W. Is breached ridge of dr related to tinaja? If so, is the tinaja responsible for the ridge or vice versa? Could waters swirling as they encountered the ridge have helped create the tinaja? Or could the tinaja created an impediment to the water flow that helped preserve the dr? 1564 Small hole indicates how Tinaja may have originated
